A 24-year-old man has died after being pulled from the water at Camber Sands beach in East Sussex on Sunday evening. The incident occurred when three people got into difficulty after entering the water.
The two others involved, a 16-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, managed to exit the water safely. Emergency services were called just before 7pm on Sunday (August 9) following reports of the incident.
Rescue operation
A large search operation was conducted, and the 24-year-old man was recovered from the water at around 7.30pm. Despite lifesaving attempts by paramedics at the scene, he was pronounced deceased a short while later. His next of kin have been informed.
A Sussex Police spokesperson said: "Just before 7pm on Sunday (August 9), emergency services were called to Camber Sands Beach in Rye, after it was reported that three people had got into difficulty after entering the water."
Coastguard response
The HM Coastguard was called to the incident at 6.37pm. An HM Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter was sent, along with Pett Level lifeboat, Coastguard Rescue Teams from Rye Bay and Romney Marsh, Sussex Police and South East Coast Ambulance Service.
Police have increased their presence in the area while enquiries continue. The spokesperson added: "Enquiries in the area remain ongoing, and an increased emergency presence is visible at this time."
