Part of Hove Beach in East Sussex will be closed from August 3 until the end of the summer holidays. The closure affects the area between King Alfred Leisure Centre and Second Avenue.
Project details
The closure is part of a wider project that began earlier this year to add nine new groynes to the beach. Thousands of tonnes of shingle will also be added. Once completed, the beach will be 25 metres longer. Work is expected to finish in November.
Coastal protection
Town Hall cabinet member for Transport and City Infrastructure, Councillor Trevor Muten, said: "This is a really exciting phase of the scheme. It's going to be great to see the barge offshore and the new shingle being pumped onto the beach. The completed groyne field is going to ensure the homes and businesses here are better protected from climate change, rising sea levels and storms."
Storms have impacted the area for many years, washing tonnes of shingle onto the promenade. The project aims to reduce this and keep the promenade accessible.
Beach amenities
Hove Beach features a long esplanade with a cycle lane, a grass area, cafes, and an amusement arcade. Beach huts are also available for hire along the promenade.
