Cyprus ferry capsizes: eight dead, nearly 20 missing

A ferry carrying around 270 passengers and crew has capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus, leaving at least eight people dead and nearly 20 missing.

Rescue operation under way

Helicopters and boats brought survivors back to shore after passing vessels and coastguard authorities were seen rescuing passengers from the water. Video footage showed survivors being lifted from the sea and taken to safety.

Search for the missing

Search teams and divers are looking for more survivors in deep waters. It is currently unclear whether any people remained trapped on the vessel.
