Lifeguards at Bronte Beach in Sydney's east were forced to act quickly on Friday after a female surfer was caught in large waves and pushed dangerously close to rocks known as The Twins. The incident was captured on video by witness Cora Bezemer.
The footage shows Bronte lifeguard Harrison Reid carefully walking along the cliff edge before jumping into the water with a rescue tube. Ms Bezemer said she had seen people get 'cut to pieces' on the rocks and feared for the lifeguards' safety.
After entering the water, Mr Reid helped the surfer swim away from the rocks, where they met another lifeguard with a surfboard. They paddled to the other end of the beach before returning to shore.
Lifeguard Corey Oliver said the surfer was 'very lucky' to have assistance, as she was 'really, really close to the rocks'. He noted she was not badly shaken but was upset about losing a borrowed surfboard.
