Monty Don Shares Update on Beloved Dog Ned Coping with Heatwave
Monty Don on Dog Ned's Heatwave Struggles

Gardening expert Monty Don has shared an update on his beloved golden retriever Ned as the UK continues to experience record-breaking heatwaves. In a video posted to Instagram, Ned is seen standing in a shallow outdoor bath filled with water, drinking his bathwater to stay cool. Fans were quick to comment, with one saying, “Aww…poor baby! Keep cool, Ned (and Monty and family!)” and another adding, “Poor baby is so hot. Drink up, Ned!”

Heatwave Risks for Dogs

The RSPCA warns that dogs are particularly vulnerable to heatstroke, which can be fatal if not treated promptly. They advise: “When a dog gets too hot and can’t lower its temperature by panting, it can develop heatstroke. This can be fatal, so you need to act fast to reduce their body temperature first, then get help.” Keeping dogs’ paws cool can help lower their overall body temperature, which is why Monty’s method of providing a shallow bath is effective.

Monty Don's Connection with His Dogs

Monty has previously written on his website: “I have lived with dogs all my life and so it is absolutely natural to me that wherever I am in the garden I should be accompanied by a dog or two. It is their garden as much as mine or any other members of the family.” The horticulturist, broadcaster, and author regularly shares insights from his garden on social media, including tips for gardeners and personal anecdotes.

RSPCA Advice for Pet Owners

If you are concerned about your dog in the heat, the RSPCA advises: “The best thing to do when your dog is overheating is cool first, transport second. This means acting fast to stop further heating, cooling the dog down, and then taking them to your nearest vet.” They also warn against placing wet or damp towels on your dog, as this can trap body heat. Instead, “place wet or damp towels beneath the dog - remembering to re-wet the towel frequently - but never over their body.”

Monty Don's Career Highlights

He first appeared on television in 1989 with a gardening segment on This Morning. A prolific author, he has written more than 25 books since his first was published in 1990.
