Magnitude 5.9 earthquake shakes Tokyo and Kanto region

A magnitude 5.9 earthquake rattled Tokyo and the eastern Kanto region in Japan, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Quake details

The quake struck southern Ibaraki Prefecture at a depth of 43 miles (70km) at around 2am local time on Sunday. The JMA recorded a lower 5 on Japan's seven-level seismic intensity scale in Adachi City in Tokyo, several cities in Ibaraki Prefecture, four locations in Saitama Prefecture and two in Chiba Prefecture.

The JMA said there is no threat of a tsunami.
