Eddie Howe Gets Pre-Season Boost as Livramento Injury Timeline Confirmed

Eddie Howe has received a significant pre-season boost as the injury timeline for Tino Livramento has been confirmed. The Newcastle United defender will be sidelined for four to five weeks after sustaining a calf injury that ruled him out of the 2026 World Cup with England.

Livramento's World Cup Heartbreak

England boss Thomas Tuchel confirmed the 23-year-old's absence from the tournament, describing it as a bitter blow for both the player and the Three Lions. Livramento had been preparing to face Croatia in England's World Cup opener but has been replaced by Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah.

Tuchel stated: "Tino was, of course, very disappointed and very sad. All of us were. It was kind of a little shock in training. When he stopped training, he straight away had the feeling that this can be an injury that cost him the tournament and he was unfortunately right."

Pre-Season Relief for Howe

Newcastle are due to return for pre-season training on Monday, July 13. If Livramento's recovery follows the predicted timeline, he should only miss the first week of preparations. This comes as a welcome relief for Howe, who had feared another extended spell on the sidelines for the former Southampton and Chelsea defender.

Livramento's injury-plagued 2025/26 season saw him feature in just 26 of Newcastle's 58 matches across all competitions. He will aim to put that behind him and shed the injury-prone label that is beginning to emerge.

Contract and Transfer Speculation

Livramento has two years left on his Newcastle contract and has been linked with moves to Arsenal and Manchester City. However, his fitness issues this season have reportedly raised reservations about his robustness at both clubs.

Tuchel added: "He was a key player, in good shape and available for both sides for us as a full-back. We called Trevoh Chalobah because then we free up Jarell Quansah as full-back on both sides and Djed Spence can play both sides as full-back, so Trevoh comes as a centre back alternative and gives us full coverage in the back four."
