Body of Missing Man Recovered from River Severn in Heatwave

West Mercia Police have confirmed that the body of 22-year-old Brody Leach was recovered from the River Severn in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, in the early hours of Saturday morning. Police reported that Leach had entered the river on Friday and was last seen before getting into difficulty in the water. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

Formal Identification and Family Notification

Police stated that Brody has been formally identified by his family and his next of kin have been informed. A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: "Our thoughts are with them, and we ask that their privacy is respected at this difficult time." The area around the riverside where searches were taking place has now reopened, and reassurance patrols will continue in the area.

UK Heatwave Tragedies

This incident follows another heatwave-related drowning on Wednesday, when a 50-year-old man was pronounced dead at Aberavon beach in South Wales after getting into difficulty while swimming in the sea. The UK has been experiencing a record-breaking heatwave this week, with the Met Office confirming Friday as the UK's hottest June day on record. A provisional temperature of 37.3C was recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk, surpassing the 36.7C recorded in Merryfield, Somerset, on Thursday.

Warnings About Open Water Swimming

During a previous May heatwave, at least 15 people, the majority of whom were children, drowned while swimming in open water. These tragedies have prompted widespread warnings about the dangers of swimming in open water, which is often much colder than expected and can cause cold water shock syndrome, which can be fatal.
