Virgin Media Customers Face Intermittent Internet Outages

Millions of Virgin Media customers experienced intermittent internet outages on Monday evening, with connections dropping for roughly three minutes each hour between 5pm and 7.30pm. The company, which serves 5.3 million UK customers, confirmed the issue was resolved by early Tuesday morning.

The outages were reported across major cities including Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Nottingham, and Southampton. Downdetector recorded over 30,000 reports of connectivity problems, with complaints persisting until midnight in some areas.

Virgin Media stated that the disruption was not caused by increased demand during the lockdown or a lack of network capacity. A spokesperson said: 'An intermittent broadband issue that started yesterday evening was fixed in the early hours of Tuesday. This was not caused by increased usage or a lack of capacity.'

The company apologised for the inconvenience, noting that the issue was not an 'ongoing outage' and that service had improved by 7.30pm on Monday. Virgin Media's cable network offers speeds up to one gigabit per second in some areas.
