Sky and Freeview have long been the dominant forces in the UK television landscape, serving millions of households with traditional broadcast services. However, a formidable new competitor is rapidly gaining ground, offering innovative features and expanding its free content offerings. Freely TV, launched in 2024, has already attracted over one million users and continues to enhance its platform with significant updates.
Freely's Latest Innovation: Spotlight Channels
Freely has unveiled its new Spotlight Channels, a suite of additional entertainment options that will be available at no extra cost to viewers. These channels will stream exclusively through a standard Wi-Fi connection, eliminating the need for aerial installations or satellite dishes. According to the announcement, Spotlight Channels will occupy channel 31 and channels 90 to 99 within the Freely TV guide.
Partnership and Integration
The launch partner for this initiative is V, formerly known as VIDAA, the company behind the VIDAA OS smart TV platform used in Hisense televisions. As the first CTV OS partner to integrate with Freely, V will bring a curated selection of channels to the TV guide, enhancing visibility and credibility within the UK's regulated broadcasting environment.
Deep Halder, Chief Commercial Officer at Everyone TV, which operates Freely, commented on the development. "As Freely continues to grow, we are focused on building a platform that delivers long-term value across the whole ecosystem," he stated. "Allowing CTV OS partners to participate in specific parts of the TV guide enables us to create new opportunities while ensuring free, trusted TV remains easy to find in the streaming age."
How Freely Works
For those unfamiliar with Freely, it is managed by the same team responsible for Freeview and Freesat. The key distinction lies in its delivery method: all content is transmitted via broadband, removing the necessity for aerials, satellite dishes, or complex setups. Users simply require a compatible television or set-top box and a stable Wi-Fi connection to access the service.
Currently, Freely provides over 50 live channels, on-demand content, personalised recommendations, a comprehensive TV guide, and the ability to pause live broadcasts. The addition of Spotlight Channels is expected to further enrich this lineup, though specific content details are yet to be disclosed, with more information anticipated closer to the launch date.
Market Impact and Future Prospects
This move signals a significant shift in the UK TV market, as Freely leverages internet-based streaming to challenge established players like Sky and Freeview. By offering free, accessible content without traditional hardware requirements, Freely is positioning itself as a modern alternative for viewers seeking flexibility and convenience.
As the platform evolves, it aims to balance innovation with reliability, ensuring that UK audiences can easily discover trusted television options in an increasingly digital age. The partnership with V marks a strategic step in expanding Freely's ecosystem and solidifying its presence in the competitive broadcasting sector.
