UK Broadband Watchdog Names Most Complained-About Providers

The communications regulator Ofcom has published its latest quarterly complaints data, revealing which broadband providers attracted the most customer grievances between July and September last year. The figures show that EE, TalkTalk, and Vodafone were Britain's most complained-about broadband providers during this period.

Broadband Complaint Analysis

According to the detailed report, overall complaint numbers across the communications sector remained largely stable compared to the previous quarter. However, broadband services specifically saw concentrated dissatisfaction directed toward three major providers.

EE maintained similar complaint levels to the prior quarter, while both TalkTalk and Vodafone experienced noticeable increases in customer grievances. Each of these three providers registered approximately 10 complaints per 100,000 customers during the three-month monitoring period.

In contrast, BT-owned Plusnet emerged as the broadband provider receiving the fewest complaints, continuing its strong performance in customer satisfaction metrics.

Landline and Mobile Complaint Patterns

The Ofcom data revealed broader patterns across different communication services:

  • TalkTalk also ranked as the most complained-about landline provider, with a quarter-on-quarter increase in grievances, while Utility Warehouse generated the fewest landline complaints.
  • In the mobile sector, O2, Sky Mobile and Three received the most complaints for the quarter. O2 and Sky Mobile customers primarily complained about how their complaints were handled, whereas Three customer grievances mainly related to faults, service issues and connection problems.
  • EE, Tesco Mobile, Vodafone and iD Mobile generated the fewest complaints for pay-monthly mobile services.
  • For television services, EE received the most complaints as a pay-TV provider, while Sky and TalkTalk received the fewest.

Industry Context and Expert Commentary

Ofcom regularly publishes these comprehensive reports to provide transparency about consumer experiences across the UK's main communication providers. The watchdog stated it compiles and publishes the figures to help consumers evaluate how their providers perform relative to competitors, and to assist those considering switching providers.

Ernest Doku, broadband and mobiles expert at Uswitch, commented on the findings: "Patience for poor service is wearing thin among consumers. While it is positive to see overall complaint volumes across broadband, mobile, and pay-TV remain steady, the lack of improvement across the industry is a concern for households facing rising bills."

Doku highlighted Plusnet's performance: "Plusnet has once again set the benchmark for broadband, receiving the fewest complaints, which reflects its recent win for Best Broadband Provider for Customer Service at the Uswitch 2026 Telecoms Awards."

Regarding the underperforming providers, Doku noted: "By contrast, TalkTalk and Vodafone saw complaints increase this quarter, while EE remains among the most complained-about providers."

The expert offered practical advice to consumers: "With annual price rises approaching in April, customers will be looking closely at whether their provider justifies these extra costs. If your service isn't delivering, you don't need to settle - now is the time to compare deals and see if there is a provider offering better value for money."

The report underscores the importance of consumer vigilance in an industry where service quality varies significantly between providers, particularly as households face increasing financial pressures from rising communication costs.
