In a deeply poignant moment during the historic Artemis II mission, the crew has honoured the late wife of their commander by naming a moon crater after her. As the spacecraft performed its lunar flyby, the astronauts contacted mission control to make a heartfelt request.
A Bright Spot on the Moon
Mission specialist Jeremy Hansen conveyed the crew's wish, stating, 'It’s a bright spot on the moon, and we would like to call it Carroll.' This tribute is dedicated to Carroll, the beloved wife of Artemis II commander Reid Wiseman, who passed away. The previously unnamed crater now bears her name, symbolising a lasting memorial in the celestial landscape.
Record-Breaking Mission
The emotional naming occurred as Artemis II continues to set new milestones in space exploration. The mission has already achieved a significant record, with astronauts travelling farther from Earth than any previous human spaceflight. This feat underscores the mission's pioneering role in NASA's lunar exploration programme.
The crew's gesture highlights the personal connections and human stories behind scientific endeavours, blending exploration with remembrance. As Artemis II advances, it not only pushes the boundaries of space travel but also leaves a touching legacy on the moon's surface.
