Availability and Compatibility
Read & Listen is initially being rolled out to select Audible users in the United States, with plans for broader availability in the future. Upon launch, the app will scan a user's collection to identify compatible e-books and provide directions to purchase them directly from Amazon if needed. The feature supports hundreds of thousands of titles in English, Spanish, German, Italian, and French, tapping into Audible's extensive catalogue of over 200,000 works, ranging from classics by H. G. Wells to contemporary memoirs like Prince Harry's.
While there are similarities to existing features like Whispersync for Voice in the Kindle app, which syncs progress between reading and listening modes, Read & Listen distinguishes itself by allowing both activities to occur simultaneously. This dual approach could enhance the emotional impact of narratives, as suggested by past research from University College London that found audiobooks to have a greater emotional effect than films or traditional reading, though the combined method remains untested in studies.
