Katy Perry's performance at the opening ceremony of the 2026 World Cup in the United States has drawn criticism from fans, who compared her silver gown to a 'lampshade' and expressed disappointment at her song choice. The 41-year-old singer performed a single track, 'Wonder', alongside 10-year-old Norwegian musician Tius Luka, rather than her well-known hits like 'Firework' or 'Roar'.
The dress, reportedly designed by British fashion house Stella McCartney, was widely mocked on social media. One user on X wrote: 'Katy Perry singing whilst wearing a lamp from B&M.' Another asked: 'Where can you get the lampshade Katy Perry is wearing? Asking for a friend.' A third commented: 'Katy Perry is wearing a lampshade around her waist.'
Some fans also criticised the decision to perform a lesser-known song. One said: 'Out of every song Katy could've performed she really picked one of the worst songs from her worst album.' However, others defended her, noting that she gave the young musician a platform. One supporter wrote: 'The way Katy Perry could sing one of her many hits but she chose this song because she wanted to give the kid this huge opportunity… this is so sweet.'
At the end of the performance, Perry attempted to give Tius a high five, but he ran off, leaving her hanging. The moment was noted by fans, with one saying: 'Not the kid rejecting a high five with Katy Perry!' Another added: 'The kid doesn't know, he might be so nervous and just want to get out of the crowd. It's fine.'
Perry's boyfriend, former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, also faced criticism for attending the USA vs Paraguay match instead of Canada's game against Bosnia, which ended in a 1-1 draw. One fan posted: 'Justin Trudeau at the USA game with Katy Perry instead of the Canada game earlier today, holy fraud.' Another wrote: 'Trudeau decided to be at this game instead of the Canada game. He might be in love with Katy Perry.'
Perry recently referred to Trudeau as 'the love of my life'. The couple went public in October 2025, after more than three months of dating. Perry was previously engaged to actor Orlando Bloom, with whom she shares a five-year-old daughter. Trudeau split from his wife of 18 years, Sophie, in 2023.
