The Unlikely Weatherman of Kashmir: A Social Media Phenomenon
In the rugged terrain of Kashmir, where the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway serves as the vital lifeline for the Valley, an unexpected figure has emerged as a beacon of information for over a million followers. Tahir Ahmad Giri, widely known as Tahir Banihali, has transformed from a local resident into a trusted weatherman and road condition reporter, surpassing official bulletins in credibility for many travellers.
The Critical Highway and Its Challenges
The Jammu–Srinagar National Highway is the sole all-weather connection linking the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India, carrying the economic and social pulse of the region for decades. While alternative routes like the Sinthan Road and Mughal Road exist, they remain closed during winter due to heavy snowfall, making this highway the only supply corridor for essential commodities. Last August, severe flash floods forced a 15-day closure, causing near standstill in life and trade, with significant economic losses, especially for the horticulture sector. Trucks laden with apples, pears, and other fruits were stranded for days, leading to financial devastation for growers and traders.
Tahir Banihali's Rise to Prominence
Tahir, a resident of Banihal town located about 94 kilometres from Srinagar, initially worked with a construction company, frequently travelling between Banihal and Ramban, the most challenging stretch of the highway. During these journeys, he witnessed constant hardships faced by commuters: landslide accidents, shooting stones, and sudden weather changes causing prolonged traffic jams. Drivers would often be stuck for hours with no clear idea of what lay ahead.
In response, Tahir began posting simple, firsthand updates about road conditions on his personal Facebook profile. His accurate and timely posts quickly gained attention, leading him to create a dedicated page called ‘National Highway Updates’. Today, he boasts approximately 1.1 million Facebook followers and nearly 197,000 Instagram followers, with his live videos and posts serving as the first source of information for passengers, truck drivers, and families planning journeys.
Ground-Level Reporting and Community Impact
Despite his immense popularity, Tahir operates without specialised equipment or official resources, relying solely on his smartphone. Whenever a landslide, traffic jam, or road damage occurs, he reaches the location and goes live, showing viewers the exact situation. This real-time coverage allows drivers to make informed decisions, saving them from potential losses.
"I receive many calls every day, and I try my best to respond to all of them. If a driver needs a Hydra or any recovery machine to pull out a stranded vehicle, I personally contact the operator and even travel with them to the exact spot," Tahir explains.
For many, his word carries more weight than official bulletins because he reports directly from the ground. During winter, when snow and landslides frequently disrupt traffic, people routinely check his updates before finalising travel plans. Mohammad Amin, a cab driver, notes, "Tahir is our guide. Whenever we call him, he is available day or night, even in harsh weather. Before social media, we would get stuck without knowing what was ahead. Now, we check his updates first. He gives us confidence, and his information helps us keep our passengers safe."
Unexpected Contributions and Naming Landmarks
Over time, Tahir has made another unexpected contribution: naming previously unnamed spots along the mountainous terrain to improve communication during emergencies. He coined names like "Chinar Point," which have been adopted even by traffic police and official advisories. This innovation has enhanced clarity for travellers and emergency responders alike.
Vital Support for the Horticulture Trade
For truck drivers transporting perishable goods like fruits and vegetables, Tahir's updates are invaluable. Timely delivery is critical in the horticulture trade, as delays can lead to spoilage and financial losses. Omar, a frequent truck driver on the highway, shares, "Earlier, before Tahir’s updates, we depended only on the official traffic plan. Now we mainly follow his live videos and then decide when to load our trucks. When we are carrying fruits or vegetables, timely delivery is very important. If a landslide happens, he shows us the exact situation live. If it’s major, we wait. If it’s minor, we move ahead. His updates save us from huge losses."
In the past, drivers would unknowingly drive toward landslides and end up stranded for hours or days without immediate assessment of the situation. Now, Tahir's live videos reveal the exact scale, helping drivers avoid such pitfalls.
A Lifeline of Satisfaction
Reflecting on his role, Tahir says, "This highway is our lifeline, and if I can help someone reach safely, that is my biggest satisfaction." His dedication has not only transformed travel logistics in Kashmir but also fostered a sense of community and trust among millions who rely on his ground-level insights.
