BMW Expands Electric Line-Up with Affordable iX3 40 Model
BMW has unveiled a new, more accessible version of its iX3 electric SUV, the iX3 40, set to join the range from summer 2026. Priced from £53,250, this entry-level model undercuts the higher-spec iX3 50 xDrive by £5,505, making BMW's advanced Neue Klasse electric architecture available to a broader audience. This strategic move positions the iX3 40 as a competitive option in the premium electric SUV sector, offering a compelling blend of affordability and cutting-edge technology.
Performance and Range Specifications
The iX3 40 features a single rear-mounted motor producing 320bhp, enabling a 0–62mph acceleration time of 5.9 seconds and a top speed of 124mph. Unlike the all-wheel-drive iX3 50, this model maintains rear-wheel drive, appealing to drivers who prefer a traditional BMW driving experience. The motor is part of BMW's sixth-generation eDrive system, specifically designed for the Neue Klasse platform.
In terms of range, the iX3 40 offers up to 395 miles on a single charge, according to BMW's claims. While this is less than the 500 miles offered by the pricier model, it remains highly competitive in its class, ensuring practicality for long-distance journeys. The battery has a usable capacity of 82.6kWh and utilises new cylindrical cells with high energy density, integrated into the car's structure to reduce weight and enhance efficiency.
Advanced Charging and Technology Features
A key highlight of the iX3 40 is its high-speed charging capability. Equipped with an 800-volt electrical architecture, it supports rapid charging at up to 300kW. BMW states that this allows for adding up to 186 miles of range in just 10 minutes, with a 10 to 80 per cent charge taking approximately 21 minutes on a compatible DC fast charger.
Design-wise, the iX3 40 is identical to its more expensive counterparts, featuring the clean Neue Klasse styling with a simplified kidney grille and smooth surfaces. Inside, it includes BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive system running BMW Operating System X, which combines touchscreen, voice, and haptic controls. Voice control is enhanced with the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, now integrating Amazon Alexa+ technology for more natural interactions and access to apps, though initial rollout will be limited to select markets.
Software and Driving Dynamics
Underpinning the iX3 40 is BMW's new software-led approach, centred around four high-performance computers, or "superbrains," which provide significantly greater processing power than previous systems. This advanced architecture supports features such as a new braking system, which BMW claims delivers the smoothest stopping process ever achieved, and improved dynamic control for sharper, more responsive handling.
For UK buyers, the iX3 40 represents a significant expansion of BMW's next-generation EV strategy. With a starting price just over £53,000, it offers long range and ultra-fast charging—two critical factors in the current EV market—while remaining competitively priced against many premium rivals. This launch underscores BMW's commitment to making electric mobility more accessible without compromising on innovation or performance.
