Father Lee Taylor, a vicar managing three churches in North Wales, has asserted that Christians should not fear the discovery of extraterrestrial life. He rejects the notion that aliens or UFOs are demonic, instead pointing to biblical passages that he believes support the existence of intelligent life beyond Earth.
Biblical Evidence for Alien Life
Taylor has examined scripture to prepare Christians for the possible confirmation of alien life by science. He highlights Ezekiel's vision of a 'wheel within a wheel' and Jesus' words in John 14:2, 'In my Father's house are many rooms,' as clues that God's creation extends beyond humanity. According to Taylor, these verses suggest a larger universe that does not diminish God but expands creation.
He told the Daily Mail: 'A bigger universe, or the discovery of a bigger universe, doesn't make God smaller. It just makes creation bigger. I don't think it's a challenge to faith. I think it's a challenge to the limits of our theological imagination.'
Rejecting the Demonic Theory
Taylor calls on Christians to abandon the belief that UFOs or aliens are demonic. He argues that this perspective fosters fear instead of an open-minded approach to unknown phenomena. 'There's no reason to assume that every other form of intelligence would fit neatly into categories of absolute good or absolute evil,' he said.
Key Passages and Interpretations
The vicar considers the Book of Genesis crucial, as it describes humanity as God's supreme creation on Earth, leaving room for intelligent life elsewhere. Ezekiel's 'wheel within a wheel' is often seen as a symbolic vision of God's glory, but Taylor suggests it could describe advanced alien technology that ancient writers could not explain. John 14:2, traditionally interpreted as referring to heaven's inclusivity, Taylor wonders if it hints at a far larger creation. 'When Jesus talks about 'many rooms' or 'many mansions', using language that people at the time would have understood, I wonder if this is some sort of hint? Could we view it that way?' he said.
