Netflix thriller The Following so addictive viewers binge until 6am

A Netflix thriller is so addictive that viewers are staying up until the early hours of the morning to binge-watch it. The recommendation comes after one person took to social media seeking suggestions for a show that would keep them hooked all night.

In a TikTok post, a user named Robert wrote: "Give me a dangerously addictive Netflix show to watch that will have me binging until 3am begging for another episode."

Viewers recommend The Following

Many people suggested a variety of shows in response, but one popular recommendation was the hit American series, The Following. One viewer commented: "The Following, had to make myself go to bed at 6am could not stop watching! A 10/10."

The show is an American psychological thriller that follows Ryan Hardy, played by Kevin Bacon, a troubled hard-drinking former FBI agent, and his quest to recapture serial killer Joe Carroll, portrayed by James Purefoy.

Plot and cast details

When Carroll escapes custody, Hardy is brought out of retirement to help the FBI hunt him down and protect Carroll's ex-wife, Claire Matthews, and their son, Joey. Set in New York City, Virginia and Maryland, Carroll surrounds himself with a group of like-minded individuals he met in prison, turning them into a cult of killers. Emma Hill, played by Valorie Curry, becomes his right-hand woman.

Meanwhile, Carroll's son Joey Matthews, played by Kyle Catlett, is abducted by his father's followers as the rest of the FBI team discover this is the first step in his wider plan to escape custody and be reunited with his ex-wife Claire, played by Natalie Zea.

Seasons and viewing figures

The second season centres on a new cult, led by Lily Gray, played by Connie Nielsen, and her twin sons Mark and Luke Gray, both played by Sam Underwood, as they begin to make public statements to lure Carroll out of hiding while everyone believes him to be dead. The third season follows Hardy's life after Carroll's arrest and shows Kevin Bacon's character in a better place.

The Following ran for three seasons between 2013 and 2015. It was cancelled by Fox due to a steady decline in live TV viewership. Although the show premiered in 2013 as a massive breakout hit, drawing over 15 million viewers for its pilot, it struggled to maintain that momentum. By the second season, average viewership dropped to around 5.2 million, while the final season saw live airings plummet to roughly 3 million viewers.

To watch The Following, viewers have several options. It can be streamed on Channel 5 for free with ads, or on Netflix with a subscription. Amazon Prime, Apple TV and Sky Store all have options to rent or buy episodes or the full season.
