Elon Musk Admits xAI Has 'Foundational Problems' Requiring Complete Rebuild
Musk Reveals xAI Must Be Rebuilt From Foundations Up

Elon Musk Announces Major Overhaul of xAI Following Internal Criticism

Elon Musk has publicly revealed plans for a comprehensive structural rebuild of xAI, the artificial intelligence company responsible for overseeing the social media platform X and its controversial Grok chatbot. The announcement comes in response to mounting criticism from former staffers who have described a dysfunctional culture of chaos and mismanagement within the firm.

Musk's Admission of Regret and Rebuilding Plans

The tech billionaire, who founded xAI in March 2023 with the stated mission of challenging what he termed the "woke" AI models from competitors like Google and OpenAI, expressed significant regret over the company's trajectory. In a candid post on X, Musk stated, "xAI was not built right first time around, so is being rebuilt from the foundations up. Same thing happened with Tesla." This reference points to the extensive personnel and structural changes that characterised the early years of his electric vehicle manufacturer.

Musk further acknowledged that "many talented people" had applied to join xAI but were either declined an offer or even denied an interview. He issued a public apology, noting, "My apologies. Baris Akis [head of recruitment at xAI] and I are going through the company interview history and reaching back out to promising candidates." This admission highlights potential recruitment failures that may have contributed to the firm's internal issues.

Former Employees Expose 'Foundational Problems' and Toxic Culture

Musk's post prompted several former xAI employees to share their experiences, revealing deep-seated problems with the company's structure and leadership. AI specialist Benjamin De Kraker, who worked at xAI between September 2024 and March 2025, described "foundational problems" that he claims were deliberately hidden from Musk himself.

"xAI employees would come in full of excitement and enthusiasm, and would have it stomped out by managers who hated ideas," De Kraker wrote in a social media post. He criticised the management layer, stating, "They filled xAI with middle managers and busybodies. It was one of the most DEI and corporate-y places I've ever worked. I came in wanting Elon and xAI to win and just left sad." This testimony paints a picture of a stifling corporate environment that crushed innovation and morale.

Serious Concerns Over AI Safety and Management Style

Additional criticism has been directed at Musk's personal management approach and xAI's handling of AI safety, particularly concerning the Grok chatbot. A recent report in The Verge cited anonymous former employees who expressed grave concerns. One former staffer, who wished to remain unnamed, stated bluntly, "There is zero safety whatsoever in the company – not in the image [model], not in the chatbot."

The source further alleged that Musk is "actively trying to make the model more unhinged because safety means censorship, in a sense, to him." They described a survivalist culture within the company, noting, "You survive by shutting up and doing what Elon wants." These allegations suggest a top-down management style that prioritises Musk's vision over established safety protocols, potentially creating significant ethical and operational risks.

The controversy surrounding xAI is not Musk's first brush with AI-related criticism. He previously faced backlash for an AI image-creation feature on X, which prompted activist protests, including a poster installation in London in January 2026. The planned rebuild of xAI from its foundations represents a stark admission of failure and a significant attempt to reset the company's direction amidst these compounding challenges.
