Liverpool radio presenter Leanne Campbell has spoken out against fake audio circulating on social media that uses AI to imitate her voice. The award-winning broadcaster and podcaster has warned followers to remain vigilant and be cautious of misleading content.
Campbell shared a video statement on Instagram, claiming someone had been using her voice to train AI tools to impersonate her across several platforms. She said: "Not an easy one but it needs to be dealt with. As always I'll do it with a smile."
AI-generated audio replicating her voice
Campbell explained that she had become aware of content appearing to use AI-generated audio replicating her voice. She said: "Over the past 48 hours, I have received numerous messages from members of the public asking whether I am genuinely speaking in this content. I'm not."
She described it as the "unauthorised synthetic replication and use of my vocal identity," particularly where the content could mislead the public into believing she had said something she had not. Campbell thanked those who flagged the content and said she would be "taking the relevant steps."
Fighting for Scousers in radio
The presenter described the "shady behaviour" as disheartening because of the battles she has faced "trying to fight for Scousers to get work in radio or voiceovers." She recalled: "I remember a time when you'd read the brief and it'd say, no Scousers. You know, I fought my way onto our very own Liverpool radio station."
Campbell added: "I was the only scouse woman there in my own city of Liverpool. So I felt like I'd done a good job. I'm very proud of where we got to."
Advice to followers
In concluding her video, Campbell asked followers to be aware that if they cannot see her face and the content does not appear on her own social media pages, it is not authentic. She said: "So to be clear, if you hear my voice on anything and not my face, and I'm not posting it or promoting it or creating it, it's not me."
