Counter-Strike 2 Season 5 Patch Notes: Bomb Changes, Cache Returns
CS2 Season 5: Bomb Changes, Cache Returns, Full Patch Notes

Counter-Strike 2 Season 5 has arrived after two days of downtime, bringing major changes to competitive play. The most significant update reworks how the bomb detonates, shifting from radial proximity to volumetric damage that accounts for walls and obstacles between the explosion and the player. Additionally, the explosion now emits a shockwave that expands rapidly from the detonation point, giving players a brief window to escape. However, the bomb now deals a minimum of 1 HP damage to all players on the map, regardless of distance.

Bomb Mechanics Overhaul

Previously, bomb damage was calculated based on a player's direct distance from the explosion. In Season 5, damage is determined by precomputed simulation values baked into each map, meaning the number of walls and their thickness now matter. This allows survival in spots that were previously lethal. For example, on Nuke, players on the A bomb site can survive a B plant explosion. On Inferno, sitting in Church while the bomb is planted on B site also results in reduced damage.

Valve stated: "Damage is now applied according to precomputed simulation values, baked into the compiled map." The shockwave damage expands quickly from the center instead of being applied instantly, adding a tactical element to bomb avoidance.

Map Pool Changes: Cache Returns

Overpass has been removed from the Active Duty map pool, replaced by Cache. This marks Cache's first return to Active Duty in seven years, a move widely anticipated by the community. The update also removes community maps Warden, Stronghold, Alpine, and Sanctum from all game modes, while adding Boulder, Fachwerk, and Shelter to Competitive, Casual, and Deathmatch modes. Debris and El Dorado join Wingman mode.

Premier Season Reset and Armory Updates

Premier ratings are fully reset for Season 5, requiring players to complete 10 placement matches to earn a new rank. The Armory introduces two new weapon collections—Spy Tech and Arabesque—and two new sticker collections: Fruits & Vegetables and Auto Racing. Previous collections (Train 2025, Sport & Field, Sugarface 2, Elemental Craft) are no longer available.

Additional Fixes and Tweaks

Performance improvements include reduced scoreboard rendering cost. A bug where picking up dropped weapons via the Buy Menu failed has been fixed. Sticker rotation precision now allows half-degree increments. Map-specific fixes include clipping adjustments on Cache and Dust II, and a pixel gap fix on Dust II. Inferno received a clipping fix to prevent a pixel boost at Top of Mid. Engine code has been updated to the latest Source 2 version.
