Apple Confirms New iPhone 17e with Major Features at Surprisingly Low Price
Apple has officially unveiled its latest smartphone, the iPhone 17e, confirming widespread predictions about this new model. Succeeding last year's iPhone 16e, the device continues Apple's strategy of delivering key premium features at a more accessible price point compared to its flagship siblings.
Affordable Pricing with Enhanced Specifications
The iPhone 17e starts at an attractive £599, which represents a significant saving of over £200 compared to the standard iPhone 17 and approximately £500 less than the iPhone 17 Pro. In a notable upgrade, Apple has doubled the base storage capacity to 256GB as standard, providing users with ample space for apps, photos, and media without additional cost.
Performance and Connectivity Boost
Under the hood, the iPhone 17e features the speedy A19 chip, offering a noticeable performance improvement over the A18 processor found in its predecessor. This enhancement ensures smoother multitasking and faster app launches. Additionally, the device is equipped with Apple's latest C1X cellular modem, which promises download speeds up to twice as fast as the previous C1 modem, enabling quicker downloads and more reliable streaming when away from Wi-Fi networks.
Display and Durability Features
The front of the iPhone 17e boasts a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display that delivers sharp, vibrant visuals with excellent colour accuracy. Protected by Apple's durable Ceramic Shield glass, the screen is designed to withstand everyday knocks and scratches. Improved anti-reflective technology further enhances usability by reducing glare in bright conditions, making it easier to view content outdoors.
MagSafe Returns and Camera Capabilities
One of the most welcome additions to the iPhone 17e is the return of MagSafe technology, which was absent from the 16e model. This feature enables faster wireless charging and allows users to easily attach compatible accessories like wallets, stands, and chargers to the back of the phone with magnetic precision.
For photography enthusiasts, the iPhone 17e includes a 48MP Fusion camera system. While it doesn't feature a dual-camera setup like higher-end models, Apple claims its advanced sensor effectively delivers two focal lengths in one, simplifying zooming and shot composition. The camera also supports 4K video recording with Dolby Vision at up to 60 frames per second, ensuring high-quality video capture.
Safety and Availability
Safety remains a priority with features like Emergency SOS via satellite, allowing users to send messages when there's no cellular coverage, and Crash Detection, which can automatically contact emergency services if it detects a serious car accident. The iPhone 17e will be available in three colour options: classic black, white, and a new soft pink finish.
Kaiann Drance, Apple's vice president of Worldwide iPhone Product Marketing, stated: "iPhone 17e combines powerful performance and features our users love at an exceptional value, making it a compelling option for customers looking to upgrade to the iPhone 17 family. With A19 for incredible performance, double the entry storage, a smarter camera system, and enhanced durability, iPhone 17e is designed to stay fast, secure, and valuable for years to come."
This launch reinforces Apple's commitment to expanding its product lineup with devices that balance premium technology and affordability, potentially attracting a broader range of consumers seeking flagship features without the flagship price tag.
