Milwaukee Brewers left fielder Brandon Lockridge was carted off the field after crashing into the side wall while chasing a foul ball during Friday night's victory over the New York Yankees.
Injury details
Lockridge slid into foul territory in the fourth inning while attempting to catch a fly ball hit by Yankees' Cody Bellinger. His right knee struck an unpadded section of the American Family Field wall. He writhed in pain, prompting a brief halt in play as medical staff attended to him before he was taken for further examination.
'Initial X-rays say it's not fractured, but he's got a huge laceration and it's going to be a while,' Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said after the Brewers' 6-0 win. 'It's all the way down to his bone — the laceration. It's pretty ugly. We don't know the extent of any other damage because there's so much swelling that we're going to have to wait until it goes down and get an MRI at that time.'
Teammates react
Lockridge lay on his stomach near the foul line as head athletic trainer Brad Epstein checked on him. He eventually rose, supported by first baseman Andrew Vaughn and Epstein. A cart transported him off the field through the left-field wall, with Garrett Mitchell replacing him.
'It's hard to see a guy like that, down in pain,' Brewers outfielder Sal Frelick said. 'That's the kind of player he is. That's the kind of teammate he is, just playing with his butt on fire. Didn't even take the wall into account there. Just trying to get an out.'
Game highlights
Lockridge, 29, had hit two RBI singles earlier in the game. He is batting .294 with no home runs, 12 RBIs, and five stolen bases in 28 games this season. Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski threw two-hit ball over six innings, reaching 103 mph on 10 pitches. Yankees' Spencer Jones struck out twice and walked once in his highly anticipated MLB debut.
