England begin their World Cup 2026 campaign on Wednesday night in Dallas against Croatia, a team that eliminated them in the 2018 semi-finals. French referee Clement Turpin has been appointed to officiate the match, and he has a history with both England manager Thomas Tuchel and star Jude Bellingham.
Turpin's Run-In with Tuchel
Three years ago, Turpin angered then-Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel during a Champions League quarter-final second leg against Manchester City. Tuchel received two yellow cards and later described Turpin as a 'Grade E' referee. Turpin showed five yellow cards in the first half at the Allianz Arena and a straight red to Dayot Upamecano for a challenge on Erling Haaland, though VAR overturned the red card. Tuchel said: 'Two things couldn't keep up with the level - the pitch wasn't in good condition and also the referee, unfortunately, was Grade E. I'd give him a one out of 10. He was absolutely terrible.'
Turpin's History with Bellingham
Turpin also has history with Jude Bellingham. During a Champions League semi-final between Bayern and Real Madrid, Bellingham appeared to try to unsettle England teammate Harry Kane before a penalty. Turpin pushed Bellingham away, a moment that made headlines. Kane later said: 'I'm sure he was saying something to try and put me off but, thankfully, it was OK. I don't know what he was saying. I saw him there mumbling something.'
Turpin's Reputation
Despite controversies, Turpin is regarded as one of Europe's top referees. He officiated the 2021 Europa League final and the 2022 Champions League final. He also refereed England's goalless draw with Slovenia at Euro 2024.
