Man Utd's Summerville Faces Shirt Number Conflict Amid Transfer Links
Summerville's Shirt Number Issue at Man Utd

Crysencio Summerville will be denied his preferred shirt number should he complete a move from West Ham to Manchester United this summer. The Dutchman has been strongly linked with a switch to Old Trafford following the Hammers' relegation, with a £50million fee being discussed.

However, West Ham are in no rush to part with a player who is also attracting interest from Roma. Summerville currently sports the No. 7 shirt at the London Stadium, having claimed it upon his arrival from Leeds in 2024 after previous occupant James Ward-Prowse departed on loan that summer.

But the iconic number is already spoken for at Old Trafford. Mason Mount has held the shirt since 2023, having inherited it following Cristiano Ronaldo's second exit from the club midway through the 2022/23 campaign.

Other Shirt Numbers Unavailable

Much like Summerville, Ederson is unlikely to be handed his favoured number upon his anticipated arrival from Atalanta. The No.13 he prefers is currently assigned to Patrick Dorgu, while another reported target, Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, would similarly struggle to prise the No. 8 away from Bruno Fernandes.

The No.24 Summerville is currently wearing for the Netherlands at the World Cup belongs to Andre Onana. However, the goalkeeper is widely expected to leave Old Trafford this summer.

Possible Alternatives

The No. 10 he donned in his final Leeds campaign is held by Matheus Cunha and seems unlikely to become available. He could adopt the No. 38 he wore during his first two seasons at Elland Road if current holder Jack Fletcher decides on a switch.

Further alternatives include the No. 12, which is unoccupied following Tyrell Malacia's departure. Casemiro's former No. 18 is also set to be freed up after the Brazilian's exit.

The No. 9 shirt also remained vacant last season following Rasmus Hojlund's departure. However, it remains unclear whether another player will claim it before a deal for Summerville can be finalised.

Other West Ham Players Linked

Summerville is among several West Ham players being linked with a move to Old Trafford after the London club's relegation. The Dutchman shone during the latter stages of last season as the Hammers came agonisingly close to escaping the drop and netted on his World Cup debut against Japan.

Meanwhile, midfielder Mateus Fernandes is also attracting significant interest, though an asking price of £80m could ultimately put off potential buyers. There have also been suggestions regarding Jarrod Bowen and El-Hadji Malick Diouf as Nuno Espirito Santo discovers who is willing to remain and battle for promotion from the Championship.
