Ben Stokes to Return as England Captain at Trent Bridge, Confirms McCullum
Stokes to Return as Captain at Trent Bridge, Says McCullum

Ben Stokes will return as England captain for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, head coach Brendon McCullum confirmed on Friday. The squad for the match will be announced later today after informing the players.

McCullum Supports Stokes After Disciplinary Process

Speaking to reporters, McCullum addressed the speculation around Stokes' mental state and the disciplinary process following an incident that led to him missing the second Test. "People always have a difference of opinion, that’s the way things are – people read things differently. From my point of view I’ve been speaking to Ben every day since the incident and have obviously been trying to be supportive," McCullum said.

He added: "I think it was great he was able to play cricket this week and get some runs. He looked like he had a bit of pep in his step as well. We know a fit, firing Ben Stokes is an asset to every team in the world."

Stokes' Actions Disappointing but Man Supported

McCullum emphasised the distinction between the player's actions and his character. "You’ve got to separate the actions from the man. I was disappointed with the actions, which didn’t meet the standards we’ve set for ourselves, but then you support the man. I’ve always firmly believed in that," he said.

The head coach noted that a formal disciplinary process had to be completed before any decisions could be made. "There was a formal disciplinary process we had to go through. Until you have that information, nobody is able to make any decisions or make any emphatic public statements. People make mistakes, right? We all try to abide by standards, but you’re always supporting the man."

Root Praised for Stepping Up

McCullum also praised Joe Root, who captained the side in Stokes' absence during the second Test. "I want to make special mention of Joe Root. The way he picked up the responsibility in a difficult period… I can’t speak highly enough of him," McCullum said.

Looking ahead to the Trent Bridge Test, McCullum expressed optimism: "I have no problem and it’ll be nice to have the opportunity to try to close out a series win against a very good New Zealand team. If we do that I think it’ll be a mighty achievement, particularly after the last week which has been very difficult."
