Manchester United have issued their stance on Marcus Rashford's future, indicating they may reintegrate the forward into the squad after Barcelona declined to take up their buy option in the loan deal struck last summer. The England international spent the season at the Nou Camp, playing 49 games and scoring 14 goals, but the La Liga outfit did not trigger the €30 million purchase clause.
Barcelona's alternative signings
Instead of keeping Rashford, Barcelona signed Anthony Gordon from Newcastle for €80 million and are close to adding Karim Adeyemi from Borussia Dortmund for a reported €30 million, as Hansi Flick bolsters his forward line. This leaves Rashford in transfer limbo, having been part of Ruben Amorim's 'bomb squad' last summer.
United's change in stance
According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United could now welcome their academy product back into the fold. Michael Carrick, who took over as permanent manager from Amorim in January after an initial caretaker spell, wants to work with Rashford. The 28-year-old will be integrated back into the United squad for their pre-season campaign, which begins today against Wrexham in Helsinki, Finland.
Rashford's current commitments
Rashford is not part of the travelling squad to Scandinavia as he is completing his World Cup campaign with England, who face France in the third-place play-off this evening in Miami, Florida. David Ornstein previously reported that a £40 million exit clause, which all clubs except Liverpool and Manchester City could trigger, expired earlier this week.
