Man United stop revealing Champions League away squads

Manchester United will not confirm their travelling squads for this season's Champions League away games as they believe it could be disadvantageous.

United have historically confirmed their squads for European away games shortly before leaving a private terminal at Manchester Airport, but they will not publicly announce which players have travelled this season. It's understood United have decided to change their approach as they believe that sharing the travelling squad could be disadvantageous, as their opponents will know which players are available the day before the match.

Open training session and absentees

United held an open training session on Monday morning, which all clubs participating in UEFA competitions must do before games, and Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw were notable absentees. A late decision will be made on whether the pair travel to face Atletico Madrid. In the past, the club would announce the travelling squad and confirm whether they had been included, but that won't happen today.

It's unclear whether Matthijs de Ligt will travel with the team today. It's thought he still needs more time to be available for selection again, but he arrived with the squad at Old Trafford last weekend and travelled to London to face Fulham before the international break.

Injury updates and upcoming match

Michael Carrick does not usually offer detailed injury information when he speaks to the media during press conferences, but he does confirm which players are sidelined - and roughly how long they will be out for. United are not required to confirm their travelling squad ahead of games.

The Reds need to secure a positive result against Atletico on Tuesday night, having returned from the international break with a 1-1 draw against Tottenham, who competed with 10 men in the closing stages.

United have taken six points from six Premier League games, their worst return at this stage of a campaign in 40 years, when Ron Atkinson was replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson in November 1986.
