Lewis Hamilton triumphed for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix with a magnificent drive to secure an emotional maiden win for the Scuderia. The veteran British driver and seven-time world champion ended a run of 40 grands prix without victory, denying his compatriot George Russell of Mercedes, who finished second after being outmaneuvered by Ferrari's three-stop strategy and his teammate Kimi Antonelli.
Intense drama unfolded behind Hamilton late in the race as Antonelli, the drivers' championship leader, battled Russell for second place. The Italian was forced to retire just after overtaking Russell with five laps remaining. Lando Norris of McLaren completed an all-British podium, the first since 1968. Charles Leclerc of Ferrari, having fought from 10th on the grid after a qualifying crash, was forced to retire at the last due to a technical issue. Max Verstappen of Red Bull finished fourth, followed by Oscar Piastri of McLaren in fifth, Isack Hadjar of Red Bull in sixth, and Pierre Gasly of Alpine in seventh.
Hamilton's Emotional Victory
"Grazie a tutti, thank you so much, you've helped me achieve this dream, and I can't thank you enough," Hamilton said to the Ferrari team on the radio after taking the chequered flag. "To my family, I love you, and to the fans: thank you for continuing to remind me who I am."
Hamilton had praised his Ferrari team for the performance upgrade brought to Spain after nearly snatching pole from Russell on Saturday. His performance consolidated second place in the drivers' standings ahead of Russell, who was frustrated despite excellent practice and qualifying sessions. Meanwhile, Fernando Alonso, the 44-year-old Spanish veteran who first drove a single-seater here in 1994, was forced to retire for Aston Martin on what he had said would "probably" be his final race at the circuit. The virtual safety car resulting from Alonso's retirement allowed Hamilton to assume the lead and capitalize on fresher tires to streak away to victory.
Race Highlights
The venue was sold out, with 301,273 fans packing the Circuit de Catalunya across the weekend, and 124,870 attending Sunday's race. Novak Djokovic was seen strolling around the starting grid moments before Russell executed a perfect start, holding off Hamilton into turn one, with Antonelli close behind.
Russell took early control as the top five initially stayed in order: Russell, Hamilton, Antonelli, Norris, and Verstappen. Leclerc was the big mover, gaining four places to sixth by lap 10 after overtaking Piastri. Hadjar dropped to 13th after a poor start.
Russell built a lead of more than three seconds before pit stops began. Halfway through the race, Russell and Antonelli were dueling for the lead after Hamilton pitted from second. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had set rules of engagement: "For me, the primary thing is no contact. I think Antonelli's going to be on the attack and that's fine."
Hamilton and Verstappen both opted for a three-stop strategy, with Hamilton taking the lead after 42 laps. "It's the critical moment. We have our chance," Hamilton was told on team radio just before.
Final Standings
Once in front, Hamilton drove magnificently, leading Russell by 13 seconds on lap 58. Behind him, Antonelli pushed Russell, with Russell being told to pick up the pace. As Hamilton streaked ahead, leading by nearly 15 seconds with five laps to go, Antonelli pulled off a thrilling move to overtake his teammate but then ground to a halt due to a power failure. Leclerc also suffered late heartbreak with a technical issue.
Hamilton's sensational victory, nearly 20 seconds ahead of Russell, signals the possibility of an eighth world title after Ferrari's marked improvement.
