Glasgow Tartans Fold After Two Games Due to Dangerous Turf Issues
Glasgow Tartans Fold After Two Games Over Safety Concerns

A newly-formed American football team based in the UK has ceased operations after playing just two games. The Glasgow Tartans, who began playing in April as members of the International Arena League, have folded following their opening two fixtures. They no longer appear in the league standings.

Safety Concerns and Turf Issues

During their only home game at the Braehead Arena on the outskirts of Glasgow, the team faced significant safety issues. The artificial turf kept lifting up during the match, forcing players to use makeshift crash pads made from shop-bought mats taped to the arena walls. Declan Clay, a player and student at Edinburgh Napier University, described the conditions as "really dangerous." He told BBC Scotland: "I'd never played in conditions like that before and this was supposed to be a professional team."

Organizational Chaos

Players also had to borrow uniforms because their own kits had not arrived. The team heavily relied on AI-generated imagery on its official accounts, including one promoting a meet-and-greet with players that was advertised without consulting any players. Additionally, players were asked if they would relocate to Las Vegas to play as the Tartans there. Clay declined due to his studies, and he believes other players were told they would be re-drafted to other teams if they moved.

Financial and Logistical Problems

Clay signed a contract paying £1,000 per game with an additional £1,000 for each victory. However, the team quickly became a mess. A botched trip to the US saw players land in Cincinnati despite being told they were flying to Ohio. They secured a victory over Stuttgart but were initially told they would face a different team. The entire trip and flight home occurred within 26 hours.

All European teams in the International Arena League have vanished and been replaced by the European Stars, who will play all games in the USA. Braehead Arena has been processing refunds for Tartans season ticket holders.
