Four England players are at risk of missing a potential World Cup semi-final if they receive a yellow card in the quarter-final against Norway on Saturday. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly are all one booking away from a one-match suspension, according to FIFA tournament regulations.
How the yellow card rule works
Under FIFA rules, any player who accumulates two yellow cards across different matches in the competition receives an automatic one-match ban. The four England players were each booked during earlier knockout rounds, meaning another caution against Norway would rule them out of the following fixture.
If England progress and these players avoid a booking in Miami, their existing yellow cards will be wiped after the quarter-final phase. This means no player can be suspended from the World Cup final through yellow card accumulation in the semi-final. From the semi-finals onwards, only a red card can lead to a suspension for the final.
Jarell Quansah already suspended
Defender Jarell Quansah is the only England player definitely ruled out of the Norway clash. The 23-year-old received a straight red card in the 54th minute of England's 3-2 round of 16 victory over Mexico for a serious sliding challenge on Jesús Gallardo.
FIFA's disciplinary committee extended Quansah's ban to two games, deeming the tackle serious foul play under Article 14 of their code of conduct. This means if England beat Norway, Quansah will also miss the semi-final. He can only feature again if the Three Lions reach the World Cup final.
Impact on Thomas Tuchel's squad
With Quansah unavailable, Thomas Tuchel must adjust his defensive lineup for the quarter-final. The four players on yellow cards will need to exercise caution, especially in a high-stakes match against a Norway side that has impressed in the tournament.
England's potential semi-final opponents would be either Argentina or Switzerland, depending on the outcome of their quarter-final. Tuchel will hope his key players can avoid bookings to keep his strongest squad available for the latter stages.
