British wildcard Arthur Fery produced a stunning straight-sets victory over world No.9 Flavio Cobolli in the Wimbledon quarter-finals, but the Centre Court crowd expressed their displeasure when informed he would face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old French-born Brit triumphed 6-4, 7-6, 6-0, continuing his remarkable run at SW19.
Fery's Historic Run
Fery is only the fourth British player to reach the Wimbledon semi-finals since 2000, joining Tim Henman, two-time champion Andy Murray, and Cameron Norrie. He is also just the second wildcard to reach the semis, following 2001 champion Goran Ivanisevic. The victory over Cobolli marked his second win on Centre Court in as many matches.
Crowd Reaction to Zverev Match-Up
During his post-match interview, Fery was informed that he would face recent French Open winner Alexander Zverev on Friday. The crowd booed loudly, making their feelings clear about the German star. Fery smiled but did not comment, as the partisan atmosphere promised a hostile reception for Zverev.
Fery's On-Court Comments
Fery said on court: "It gets better and better every match. I can't believe it. Playing on Centre Court second time, second win, I can't believe it." He added: "I played Flavio earlier this year in Australia and I beat him. He's done it before in a Grand Slam but that gave me a little boost of confidence. I was very nervous beforehand but kept going until the finish line."
Reflecting on the emotional final game, he said: "Definitely not calm on the inside! That last game I felt emotions I hadn't experienced before in my life. I think it's the same up there. It's unbelievable to experience it with those guys. It's a great bunch of guys. I'm so happy."
Looking Ahead
When asked about facing Zverev, Fery admitted: "I don't know, I've never been in this position before! I guess it's going to be the first time and we'll figure it out as we go. I've been doing a great job for the past 10 days and I'll do the same and see where that takes me."
