England's World Cup campaign begins against Croatia in Dallas on Wednesday night. The Three Lions are aiming to end 60 years of hurt at the tournament in North America this summer.
Drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana, and Panama, England are strongly expected to advance from their group and progress deep into the competition.
Thomas Tuchel's squad features multi-million-pound talents from the Premier League, Bundesliga, and La Liga, including stars like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Declan Rice, who are on huge contracts at Bayern Munich, Real Madrid, and Arsenal respectively.
Match Fees and Charity Donations
Interestingly, players' earnings for representing their country are comparatively modest. Each player receives approximately £2,000 per game for playing for England. This low figure reflects the emphasis on prestige and national pride rather than standard salary expectations.
Since 2007, it has been established that all players donate their match fees to the England Football Foundation, which distributes the funds to various charities across the country.
Potential World Cup Bonus
However, if England wins the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, players could potentially earn upwards of £500,000 each. A similar bonus was offered at the 2022 tournament, but this amount is more than double the £215,000 reportedly on the table at Russia 2018.
Players are also likely to increase their commercial wealth if they progress and perform well in North America. Tuchel himself is set for a huge, multi-million-pound bonus if England wins their first World Cup since 1966.
Favourites and Predictions
France and Spain are seen as tournament favourites. Former England striker Alan Shearer has backed France, but with a caveat: "France, but there's a caveat that comes with it - only if there is no in-house fighting. With the ability they have in forward positions, two or three big players are going to be left out every game, so it will come down to whether they cope with that in the right way."
