England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina will kick off as scheduled despite severe weather warnings for Atlanta, stadium officials have confirmed. The match at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Wednesday evening will proceed as planned at 8 p.m. local time, with a place in Sunday's final against Spain at stake.
Weather Warnings Issued for Atlanta
The National Weather Service has issued warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, and flash flooding in the Atlanta area throughout the day. Forecasters expect further showers and storms to develop later, with primary hazards being lightning strikes and localised flooding. However, the enclosed stadium ensures the match is unaffected.
Retractable Roof Ensures Match Goes Ahead
The Mercedes-Benz Stadium features a retractable roof, which has remained closed during the tournament. A stadium spokesperson confirmed: "Since the stadium is covered, the match is not weather-dependent so it will be played as scheduled." They added that the game will not be delayed even if fans are still entering due to weather, as the roof allows play to start on time regardless of conditions.
Gates Open Early for Fan Safety
Officials stated that gates will open three hours before kick-off, allowing supporters to enter early if adverse weather develops. This measure aims to ensure fan safety while avoiding delays. The confirmation comes as a relief after England's last-16 victory over Mexico was delayed by an hour due to severe weather in Mexico City.
England Chase Historic Final Berth
England are bidding to reach their second World Cup final and first since winning the trophy in 1966. Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, are defending their title from Qatar 2022. Thousands of Argentina fans have already begun arriving in Atlanta for the semi-final. Should England win, they will face Spain, who defeated France 2-0 in the first semi-final.
