New Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has been urged to address the "real issue" in the team's defence, with questions raised about captain Virgil van Dijk's future role. Former England international Chris Waddle believes Liverpool must strengthen their centre-back options this summer after a disappointing season.
Defensive Frailties Exposed
Liverpool conceded 53 goals in the Premier League last season, their highest tally in a 38-game campaign, contributing to a fifth-place finish and the dismissal of Arne Slot. Iraola's defensive resources have been stretched by Ibrahima Konate's free transfer to Real Madrid and the ongoing recovery of teenager Giovanni Leoni from a long-term knee injury. The club has signed 21-year-old Jeremy Jacquet from Rennes for £60 million, but Waddle insists more reinforcements are needed.
Waddle's Verdict on Van Dijk
Van Dijk, 35, started every Premier League and Champions League match last season. Waddle told OLBG: "Last year, while many pointed to tactics, I believe the real issue was the middle of the defence. If they can strengthen that, there's no reason why Liverpool can't challenge again this season." He added: "He's not going to get any quicker. He's always read the game well and has always been technically sound. But when you lose that yard of pace, it's difficult in the Premier League. The league is so quick."
Iraola's Tactical Fit
Waddle praised Iraola's attacking philosophy, saying: "He likes to play on the front foot and, as a good tactician, he prefers an attacking style that suits the way Liverpool play and what their fans want to see." However, he questioned whether the squad is good enough and whether Iraola will be allowed to bring in new players.
Kerkez Reunion
Waddle also expects Iraola to get the best out of left-back Milos Kerkez, who previously played under him at Bournemouth before joining Liverpool last summer. "I never thought that the defensive side of Milos Kerkez's game was the greatest, but his energy levels and use of the ball going forward have always been great," Waddle said. "Iraola knows how he wants to play. He's going to get the best out of him, have him play on the front foot, and get him attacking down that wing."
