Elijah Just's Role in Paulsen Motherwell Move Revealed

New Zealand international goalkeeper Alex Paulsen has joined Motherwell on a season-long loan from Bournemouth, with his national teammate Elijah Just playing a key role in convincing him to move to Fir Park.

Paulsen Replaces Ward After QPR Move

Paulsen arrives as a direct replacement for Calum Ward, who completed a £750,000 transfer to Queens Park Rangers last week. The 24-year-old could make his competitive debut in next week's Conference League qualifier against HB Torshavn.

Speaking about his move, Paulsen said: "I've got a great feeling coming in here. Obviously, I've been able to speak to Elijah about the club and everything he has said has got me excited about what's to come."

World Cup Experience and Previous Loans

Paulsen spent last month at the World Cup with New Zealand, where Just was the team's standout performer. The goalkeeper also had loan spells last season with Lechia Gdansk in Poland and previously with Auckland FC in his homeland, both clubs owned by Bournemouth owner Bill Foley.

His breakthrough came at Wellington Phoenix before his move to Bournemouth two years ago, which earned him a spot in the New Zealand national team. He now has eight caps, the most recent coming as a substitute in last month's 1-0 World Cup warm-up defeat to England.

Manager's View on New Signing

Motherwell manager Alfred Johansson believes the 6ft shot-stopper can develop further in Lanarkshire. "Alex has already shown domestically and internationally that he is an impressive goalkeeper with an exciting career ahead of him," Johansson said.

"He had a hugely successful spell in Australia and New Zealand, where he received a number of personal accolades, but he was also a part of teams that liked to play a certain style of football, and they achieved their targets."

Competition and Readiness

Paulsen acknowledged the challenge ahead: "I know coming here that I'll need to work hard to get into this team. There is a strong goalkeeping contingent already in the building, so the work starts now for me."

He added: "I've had a wonderful summer with my country at the World Cup and feel fresh coming into this season. We have some huge matches just around the corner, and we all need to be ready for the competitive action."

Johansson confirmed the need for a new goalkeeper after Ward's departure: "With Calum moving on, it was obvious that we needed to recruit in this position. We see Alex as a very similar type of goalkeeper in terms of his strengths."
