Ben Stokes is once again in hot water following a nightclub incident that has led to both him and fast bowler Gus Atkinson being investigated by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The altercation, which occurred early Monday morning, involved a Saracens rugby academy player identified as Totoa Auvaa.
What Happened?
The incident took place at the Rex Rooms nightclub in Chelsea after England's victory over New Zealand at Lord's on Sunday. Stokes and Atkinson breached the team's 12am curfew, which had been reinstated after previous alcohol-related issues during the Ashes in Australia.
According to reports, the dispute began over a reserved VIP table. Auvaa, standing 6ft 5in and weighing over 19st, believed the table was reserved for England rugby star Ben Earl, but it was actually reserved for Stokes. When asked to leave, the confusion escalated into an altercation outside the club.
Altercation Details
It is alleged that Auvaa threw a punch at Atkinson but struck an ECB security guard instead, who required stitches. Both Stokes and Atkinson were unharmed and described as 'not the aggressors'. Police were not involved.
Stokes' involvement is reported to be peripheral. Earlier in the evening, England cricketers had been socializing with Saracens players at the White Horse pub in Parsons Green, where Stokes was seen enjoying rum and cokes with England rugby captain Maro Itoje.
ECB Investigation
The ECB confirmed both players committed a 'breach of team protocols' and have given Stokes 'time and space' to decide his Test future amid fears he could retire. The investigation is ongoing.
