Wildcard Arthur Fery produced a stunning straight-sets victory over ninth seed Flavio Cobolli on Centre Court at Wimbledon, winning 6-4, 7-6, 6-0 to book his place in the semi-finals. The 23-year-old British player collapsed to the turf as the stadium erupted in celebration of his remarkable achievement.
Emotional Victory and Family Reaction
Speaking to the BBC after the match, Fery said: "It gets better and better every match. I can't believe it. Playing on Centre Court second time, second win, I can't believe it. I played Flavio earlier this year in Australia and I beat him. He's done it before in a Grand Slam but that gave me a little boost of confidence." He added: "I was very nervous beforehand but kept going until the finish line. That last game I felt emotions I hadn't experienced before in my life. I think it's the same up there (in the box). It's unbelievable to experience it with those guys. It's a great bunch of guys. I'm so happy."
BBC cameras panned to Fery's father Loic in the crowd, who had his head in his hands, trying to comprehend what had just happened. However, when the BBC presenter announced to the crowd that Alexander Zverev would be Fery's opponent in the semi-finals, the Centre Court crowd booed in unison.
From Wildcard to Fan Favourite
Fery was born in France but raised in south west London, close to the hallowed courts at Wimbledon. His father is a French businessman and hedge fund manager best known for owning French football club FC Lorient. Through his investment company Chenavari, Loic Fery has built a substantial fortune, with reports valuing his wealth at around £275 million, placing him among the richest men in France.
Handed a wildcard to the tournament, Fery has taken the competition by storm, becoming a firm favourite of the SW19 crowd. He first captured attention with a dramatic five-set victory over Zizou Bergs, battling for more than four and a half hours. Despite suffering three separate nosebleeds in the sweltering conditions, Fery refused to let the interruptions disrupt his momentum.
Road to the Semi-Finals
Fery followed that breakthrough with another impressive display, defeating former world No. 3 Grigor Dimitrov in yet another gruelling five-set encounter to book his place in the latter stages of the tournament. His remarkable run quickly won over the Wimbledon crowd, who serenaded him with chants of "Here comes the Fery" as the home favourite continued his fairytale campaign.
His performances generated growing excitement around the All England Club, with fans eager to see how far his extraordinary run could go. Fery will now face Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals on Friday.
