Arsenal have made an enquiry for Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, with initial talks held with the player's representatives. The Gunners are expected to make a concrete bid after Guimaraes informed Newcastle of his desire to leave, though no official club-to-club approach has been made yet, according to Standard Sport.
Why Arsenal want Guimaraes
Mikel Arteta prioritises signing Premier League-proven players to minimise adaptation time. Guimaraes, 28, has been almost ever-present for Newcastle over four seasons, missing only six league matches this campaign due to a hamstring injury. Arsenal have suffered from injuries in recent years and seek robust players capable of handling 60-match seasons across four competitions.
Arteta was reluctant to use Christian Norgaard, who played barely 100 Premier League minutes, and delayed trusting Myles Lewis-Skelly until May. Guimaraes would offer immediate starting quality. He has started all three of Brazil's World Cup matches, registering three assists in the group stage.
Impact on Declan Rice
Declan Rice has been managing neural pain in his hamstring since December, and Arsenal are acutely aware of his workload. He will receive sufficient rest after the World Cup, particularly if England progress deep. The Gunners want midfield options to protect Rice when needed, and Guimaraes would provide that cover. He can play alongside Rice and Martin Zubimendi, raising competition levels.
Arsenal will listen to offers for Norgaard this summer and aim to sign a midfielder who is not just a squad player but can genuinely compete for a starting spot. Guimaraes has the physicality Arteta admires, leadership qualities from captaining Newcastle, and is a player Arsenal have long admired, having considered a move in January 2022 before Newcastle swooped.
Considerations and alternatives
Guimaraes will turn 29 in November, which is a factor in how much Arsenal test Newcastle's resolve. Initial talks have also been held with Lille over 18-year-old Ayyoub Bouaddi, who would retain value better over the long term. Guimaraes has two years left on his Newcastle contract, leaving the Magpies with a decision, but they are not looking to sell, especially with Tottenham in talks over a huge-money move for Sandro Tonali. Arsenal will need to spend big to test Newcastle's resolve.
