Andy Murray failed to replicate his tennis brilliance when taking on Piers Morgan in a golf contest. The tennis icon came up short against the broadcaster at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship last year.
The opportunity for Murray to exact revenge over Morgan at the golf tournament this week won't come to fruition, with the three-time Grand Slam champion not listed in the celebrity amateur field for the pro-am event. The Scotsman would surely appreciate a chance to gain bragging rights on the links, given his competitive nature.
Murray's golfing journey since retirement
Murray, 39, has dedicated a lot of time to golf since retiring from tennis in 2024, and partnered with English golfer Eddie Pepperell in the Amateur Team Championship event in the 2025 competition.
Despite ranking lower than Morgan, who is taking part again, on the final leaderboard, Murray had moments of magic that included putting for a birdie almost 80 feet away from the pin on the par-four 13th hole. The two-time Olympic champion fought against numerous other celebrity amateurs over the weekend, including Hollywood stars Bill Murray, Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Final standings and notable performances
Murray and Pepperell earned an impressive joint-18th-place finish out of 168 teams with a final score of -23, while Morgan enjoyed a joint-fifth-place finish alongside Matthew Jordan, who finished on -27.
The first-place crown in the team event went to Ireland's Cian Foley, son-in-law of Irish racehorse owner JP McManus, who carded a stunning score of -33 with Australian professional Harrison Crowe.
Murray previously admitted to wanting to qualify for The Open, but stated he's unsure of whether he could join the field. He said: "A couple of my friends who are very good golfers have done it. If I can improve enough, I think it would be a fun thing to do. I played in the club championships at Beaverbrook a few months ago and I loved it. It was the most fun I'd had playing golf and the more I play, the less I enjoy just playing socially. I don't know if I'll be capable of entering, but I want to try and play in a few more events."
This week's celebrity field
Among the celebrities competing this week are football legends Gareth Bale, Ruud Gullit and James Milner, while actor Michael Pena and Boyzone star Ronan Keating are also taking part.
