Tyrrell Hatton has ignited a friendly rivalry with Tommy Fleetwood at The Open, showcasing a new Liverpool-themed golf bag that left the Everton-supporting Fleetwood unimpressed. The banter between the two golfers adds a local derby flavour to the major championship at Royal Birkdale in Southport.
Hatton's Liverpool-Themed Bag
Hatton, a self-confessed Liverpool fan, debuted a red-and-white golf bag emblazoned with the club's anthem 'You'll Never Walk Alone' at the 154th Open. The bag has drawn attention in the locker room, with Hatton claiming early bragging rights over Fleetwood. 'I showed him the bag in the locker room, he wasn't overly impressed, but it's fine, it's all good,' Hatton said.
Local Favourite Fleetwood
Fleetwood, an Everton supporter and local favourite, is competing in his home major. Both players finished the opening round one under par. The rivalry extends beyond the course, as Hatton noted that 'there's going to be a certain side of Liverpool that doesn't like the golf bag.'
Hatton's Liverpool Connections
Hatton has played golf with Liverpool legends such as Sir Kenny Dalglish, who lives near Birkdale, and former Reds midfielder James Milner. He admitted his busy schedule limits his match attendance, with his last game being the December 2023 clash against Manchester United. 'I travel a lot, so it's hard to justify another day away,' he explained.
Playing Partners and Rivalry
Hatton will avoid playing alongside Fleetwood this week, instead teeing off with American duo Scottie Scheffler and Bryson DeChambeau. The light-hearted rivalry adds a unique dynamic to the tournament, with Hatton's bag serving as a conversation starter among fans and players alike.
