Wrexham Face Nightmare Championship Start with Cardiff Trip
Wrexham Face Nightmare Start with Cardiff Trip

Wrexham have been handed a challenging start to their Championship campaign, beginning with an away trip to Welsh rivals Cardiff City on August 17. The fixture list, released on June 25, 2026, sets the stage for Phil Parkinson's side as they aim for promotion to the Premier League.

Opening Fixtures and Key Dates

The Red Dragons narrowly missed the playoffs last season, finishing two points behind Hull City. Their first nine matches include clashes with two relegated Premier League sides (Burnley and West Ham United), two playoff semi-finalists (Middlesbrough and Wolves), and Welsh rivals Swansea City. The home opener is against Watford on August 22, followed by a visit from fellow American-owned Birmingham City on August 29.

September brings a grueling run: back-to-back away trips to Millwall (September 2) and Swansea City (September 5), then home to Burnley (September 9) and away to West Ham United (September 12). Southampton, who received a four-point deduction for the Spygate scandal, visit the Racecourse Ground on September 19 before the first international break.

Key Rivalries and Promotion Push

The reverse fixture against Cardiff City is scheduled for March 6 at the Racecourse Ground. Wrexham will also face Swansea City at home in the final run-in. Co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney will hope for a clearer promotion picture before the final day against Bristol City on May 1.

According to club sources, Reynolds was "completely gutted" after a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough on the final day of last season allowed Hull City to leapfrog Wrexham into the playoffs. Middlesbrough visit on November 4, with the return leg on January 27.

Festive Period and Final Stretch

The festive fixtures include Queens Park Rangers (home), Stoke City away on Boxing Day, and Blackburn Rovers (home). The new year begins with Bolton Wanderers visiting North Wales on January 1. The final run-in features away trips to Burnley (April 6) and Birmingham City (April 17), home games against Swansea City (April 10) and Millwall (April 20), and an away match at Charlton Athletic (April 24) before the season finale against Bristol City on May 1.
