World Cup Suspension Rules: 4 England Players at Risk vs Norway
World Cup Suspension Rules: England Players at Risk

Four England Players on a Yellow Card

England face Norway in the World Cup quarter-final with four players at risk of suspension. Declan Rice, Jude Bellingham, Marc Guehi and Nico O'Reilly are each one yellow card away from a one-match ban. If any of them receives a caution against Norway, they would miss a potential semi-final against Argentina or Switzerland, should England progress.

FIFA Suspension Rules Explained

Under FIFA tournament regulations, players who accumulate two yellow cards in separate matches are handed a one-match suspension. Since these four players picked up bookings in earlier knockout rounds, another caution on Saturday will rule them out of the next match. After the quarter-final stage, yellow cards are wiped clean, meaning no player can miss the final due to yellow card accumulation from the semi-final. From the semi-finals onward, only a red card can result in a suspension for the final.

Jarell Quansah Already Suspended

Jarell Quansah is the only England player currently suspended for the quarter-final. The 23-year-old defender was shown a straight red card in the 54th minute of England's 3-2 round of 16 victory over Mexico for a heavy sliding challenge on Jesús Gallardo. Under FIFA disciplinary rules, a direct red card carries an automatic one-match ban, ruling him out of the Norway game in Miami.

Quansah's Ban Extended to Two Games

FIFA extended Quansah's suspension to two matches after deeming the challenge serious foul play, a breach of Article 14 of their code of conduct. This means if England advance past Norway, Quansah will also miss the semi-final. He will only be available again if the Three Lions reach the World Cup final.

What Happens If Players Avoid a Yellow Card

If Rice, Bellingham, Guehi and O'Reilly avoid a yellow card against Norway and England progress, their existing yellow cards will be wiped clean, just as they were after the group stage. This reset ensures no player can be suspended for the final due to yellow card accumulation from earlier rounds.
