New Zealand seized control of the second Test at the Oval after Glenn Phillips struck his maiden Test century and late wickets left England struggling at 222 for six at stumps on day two. Phillips' Century Lifts New Zealand
Resuming on 291 for seven, New Zealand added exactly 100 runs on a frustrating morning for stand-in England captain Joe Root. Phillips, the busy right-hander, became only the third New Zealander after Martin Guptill and Brendon McCullum to score centuries in all three formats. He was ably supported by Kyle Jamieson, who made 41, as the pair added 87 for the eighth wicket.
England's bowlers struggled to contain the lower order, with Root hesitant to use Jofra Archer, who was stiff after his first-day exertions and not introduced until 90 minutes into the day. Ben Duckett also dropped a regulation catch when Jamieson was on 15, denying debutant Sonny Baker his first Test wicket.
England's Response Stalls
In reply, England lost opener Jacob Bethell early, caught behind off Nathan Smith for nine. Duckett looked in fine form, scoring 36 from 25 balls, but a mix-up with new partner Emilio Gay saw him run out. Gay went on to make his second Test half-century, sharing a stand of 74 with Root, but fell soon after to a brute of a delivery from O'Rourke that brushed his shoulder on the way through to the keeper.
Root himself looked set for a big score but was trapped lbw by Henry for 46, and Harry Brook followed for 24, also lbw to Henry after a brief counterattack. James Rew struggled against the short ball and was dismissed by O'Rourke for a duck, leaving debutant Jordan Cox unbeaten on 22 with the tail.
