Thousands of football fans gathered at Manchester's biggest fanzone on Wednesday, June 17, for England's first game at the 2026 World Cup. The Three Lions faced Croatia in Dallas, Texas, in their opening group match of the newly expanded tournament hosted across the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
More than 2,000 supporters packed into Freight Island, located opposite Piccadilly Station, for the 'We Are Football Festival,' which claims to be the largest fanzone of its kind in Europe. Fans donning England shirts and draped in St George's flags began arriving from the afternoon, with anticipation building ahead of the match.
The game proved to be an emotional rollercoaster, culminating in a thrilling 4-2 victory for England. Jubilant scenes erupted when Harry Kane gave England a 1-0 lead from the penalty spot, but the joy was short-lived as Croatia equalized in the 36th minute. Kane restored England's advantage in the 42nd minute, only for Croatia to level again just before half-time.
England regained the lead early in the second half through Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford sealed the win five minutes from time, sparking wild celebrations among the crowd.
The fanzone provided a vibrant atmosphere with fans cheering, singing, and enjoying beers throughout the match. Organizers hailed the event as a huge success, with plans for further screenings of England's upcoming World Cup fixtures.
