England's World Cup campaign came to a heartbreaking end in Atlanta as Argentina staged a late comeback to win 2-1 and advance to the final. Anthony Gordon's second-half goal had put the Three Lions ahead, but Enzo Fernandez equalized in the 85th minute and Lautaro Martinez scored the winner in the 92nd minute.
Defensive Standouts
Despite the defeat, several England defenders delivered strong performances. John Stones earned an 8/10 rating for his heroic defending, getting his head to every cross possible in a display that belied his free-agent status. Djed Spence also received an 8/10, impressing at left-back with his attacking contributions and defensive solidity.
Marc Guehi was another bright spot, earning a 7/10 for a composed defensive display with plenty of clearances. Reece James scored 6/10, showing defensive reliability before being forced off with an injury scare.
Midfield and Attack
Elliot Anderson was described as "an absolute animal in midfield," earning an 8/10 despite an early booking. He covered every blade of grass with tackles and clever passes. Morgan Rogers assisted Gordon's goal with an excellent cross and earned 7/10 for driving the ball forward effectively.
Jude Bellingham received 6/10 for his energetic runs and attempts to play England out of danger. Declan Rice improved as the game progressed and had a chance to score, also earning 6/10.
Anthony Gordon, the new Barcelona signing, was England's standout attacker with an 8/10 rating. He finished cutely to give England the lead and was a constant threat. Captain Harry Kane worked tirelessly, particularly defensively, but couldn't find the net, earning 7/10.
Goalkeeper and Substitutes
Jordan Pickford made good saves to deny two Argentina headers but was beaten twice in the late collapse, receiving 6/10. Substitutes Ezri Konsa (6/10) delivered some poor crosses, while Dan Burn, Nico O'Reilly, Ivan Toney, and Marcus Rashford had too little time to make an impact after coming on late.
Unused substitutes included Trafford, D Henderson, Chalobah, Eze, J Henderson, Mainoo, Saka, Madueke, and Watkins.
