Curacao made history by securing their first-ever World Cup point in a goalless draw with Ecuador in Kansas City, thanks to a record-breaking performance from goalkeeper Eloy Room.
Room's Record-Breaking Display
Room made 15 saves during the match, the most by any goalkeeper in 90 minutes of a World Cup game since records began in 1966. His heroics helped Dick Advocaat's side bounce back from a 7-1 thrashing by Germany in their opening fixture.
The result keeps Curacao's hopes of advancing from Group E alive. If they beat Ivory Coast in their final match, they will progress to the knockout stages. For Ecuador, tipped as a pre-tournament dark horse, the draw leaves them at risk of elimination. With just one point from two games, Ecuador must beat an already-qualified Germany by a large margin to have any chance of progressing as runners-up or one of the best third-place teams.
Key Moments
Room's performance began early, denying Enner Valencia in the third minute. He later kept out Gonzalo Plata and made another impressive low stop against Valencia. Curacao had chances too, with Tahith Chong wasting a three-on-two opportunity and Juninho Bacuna having a shot blocked in the penalty area.
On the hour mark, Curacao nearly took the lead as Ecuador goalkeeper Hernan Galindez made a double save to deny Leandro Bacuna and Livano Comenencia, before Moises Caicedo blocked Jurgen Locadia's follow-up. Room continued to shine, denying Valencia and Kevin Rodriguez, while Piero Hincapie sent a free header over and Plata missed after bursting into the area. Rodriguez hit the crossbar, but Room remained the hero as the Caribbean nation held on.
Japan Comfortably Beat Tunisia
In the other overnight match, Japan secured a comfortable 4-0 win over Tunisia in Monterrey. Tunisia, playing under new head coach Herve Renard for the first time after sacking Sabri Lamouchi following a 5-1 defeat to Sweden, fell behind early. Keito Nakamura played a low pass across the six-yard box, allowing Daichi Kamada to break the deadlock four minutes in.
Ayase Ueda doubled the lead in the 31st minute with a superb effort, and Junya Ito added a third in the 69th minute with a cool low finish. Ueda wrapped up the game with a looping header from Kaishu Sano's cross seven minutes from time.
Japan coach Hajime Moriyasu said: "We didn't know exactly what the opponents would do, but we didn't focus too much on them. Instead, we prepared well for what we wanted to do and played aggressively. During our preparations, the coaching staff made it clear what we needed to do, and because of that the players were able to perform to their full potential."
