Centenary Celebrations in South America
The centenary matches will take place on 8 and 9 June 2030, honoring the first World Cup in 1930, which was hosted and won by Uruguay. Argentina and Paraguay are included as recognition of CONMEBOL's historical role. After these matches, the tournament will move to Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.
Travel and Rest Periods
FIFA has scheduled an 11- to 12-day travel and rest period for the six South American teams before their second group matches. The remaining six group opponents will have five to six days. The official opening matches in Europe and Africa will occur on 13 and 14 June 2030.
Expansion Considerations
FIFA president Gianni Infantino has floated the idea of expanding the World Cup to 64 teams. "When you organise a World Cup, it's important that you organise it for the whole world," Infantino told Blue Sport. "Every nation should be able to dream of taking part in the World Cup."
