Royal Birkdale Won't Show England World Cup Semi-Final

The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale will not screen Wednesday evening's World Cup semi-final between England and Argentina, organizers have confirmed. The match kicks off at 8pm in Atlanta, but spectators on the final practice day will have to watch elsewhere.

R&A Email Confirms No On-Site Broadcast

An email sent to ticketholders on Wednesday stated: "Please note that Wednesday's World Cup semi-final between Argentina and England will not be shown on-site at The Open. Fans wishing to watch should plan their evening accordingly." The tournament begins Thursday with the first round.

Potential Final Clash Already Considered

The R&A had previously acknowledged the scheduling conflict. Mark Darbon, the R&A chief executive, said in April: "We're conscious of other events happening on that date. As we approach the championship, we'll ensure we try and avoid that clash wherever possible." Tee times for Sunday's final round could be moved earlier if England reach the final, avoiding a clash with the World Cup final.

Players React to the World Cup

English golfers at Royal Birkdale have been asked about the tournament. Justin Rose, who tees off at 9:36am on Thursday, said: "I was kind of hoping for a later tee time. I'd take a win on penalties if it happened, but obviously we're looking for a short, sharp match and a reasonable bedtime." He added: "We've got big things as well to do this week, but at the same time, it's a match where if you think that you're not going to watch it, you're probably kidding yourself."

England's Road to the Final

Victory for Thomas Tuchel's side would secure England's place in the World Cup final for the first time since winning the competition on home soil in 1966. The Three Lions face reigning champions Argentina in the semi-final.
