Adam Peaty broke down in tears after claiming a bronze medal in the 100m breaststroke at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. The three-time Olympic champion had to settle for an unexpected third-place finish in his signature discipline.

Australian Sam Williamson took gold with a time of 59.17 seconds. Filip Nowacki, 18, secured Jersey's first medal since 1990 with 59.34 seconds for silver. Peaty entered the final as the fastest qualifier but could only manage bronze.
Emotional Aftermath
In an emotional interview with BBC Sport, Peaty said: "It took a lot of courage to get back into the sport, so we should be happy with everything we get, but then that contradicts the athlete inside me and what I work for."
He added: "I just think I deserve more. I know sport isn't about what you deserve or even what you work for – it's who gets it on the day. I just know I'm a better athlete than that. It's very disappointing."
Personal Challenges
The 31-year-old has faced a challenging period, including a family rift before marrying Holly Ramsay, daughter of chef Gordon Ramsay, last December. He also stepped away from swimming in 2023 due to mental health struggles and missed Olympic gold in Paris two years ago.
Peaty has spent considerable time away from his son and missed family events. He compared the bronze to "getting knocked out in the group stages in the World Cup for a very good team. You know you're better and it hurts because you know you have to wait for a very long time for the next championships."
He stated this is "probably – realistically – my last Commonwealth Games" and expressed frustration: "I thought I'd trained for better. I could do better. I've been faster this season."
Future Plans
Peaty has pledged to continue competing for at least another two years, with the 50m race included in the programme for Los Angeles 2028. He is scheduled to return to the pool for that event at the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.
